The Barrie Colts have acquired goaltender Matthew Sbrocca in a trade with the Oshawa Generals.

Just days away from the start of the Ontario Hockey League season, the Barrie Colts announced this morning they have added a new goaltender to the stable.

Barrie has swung a deal with the Oshawa Generals for 19-year-old netminder Matthew Sbrocca in exchange for the rights to defensive prospect Thomas Stewart, who was selected by the Colts in the eighth round (145th overall) of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.

Sbrocca, who hails from the Windsor area, stands six-foot-three and weighs 199 pounds. He was originally drafted by the Generals in the seventh round (131st overall) of the 2017 OHL Priority Draft.

The Colts' new goalie joins the team after spending the 2019-20 season with the LaSalle Vipers of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. During his only appearance of the 2021-22 OHL pre-season, he stopped 33 of 34 shots and recorded a .971 save percentage in the Generals loss.

“We are excited to add Matthew to our club and look forward to having him be a part of the team moving forward," Barrie Colts head coach and general manager Marty Williamson said on the team's website.

"Matthew was a goalie our scouts identified in his OHL draft year and have paid close attention to since," he added. "We think Matthew has a lot to prove and we look forward to helping him continue his OHL career."

The Colts open the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 7 at home against the Niagara IceDogs.
