The Chippewas of Rama First Nation are filled with pride and excitement as we celebrate one of our own, Sydney Sawyer, on her remarkable achievement of being named to Team Canada’s national U18 team.

Sydney is representing Canada at the 2025 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championships, taking place in Finland until Jan. 12, 2025.

Sydney’s journey to the international stage is a testament to her exceptional talent, dedication, and hard work. A rising star in women’s hockey, Sydney has garnered numerous accolades throughout her career, being recognized for her outstanding play at the provincial and national levels and is known for her leadership, skill, and sportsmanship both on and off the ice.

Her passion for hockey was instilled in her by her father and older brother, both talented hockey players in their own right. Sydney also honed her skills by competing in the Little Native Hockey League (LNHL), proudly representing our community.

The LNHL, a cornerstone of Indigenous youth hockey, has long provided a platform for young players to develop their abilities and connect with their culture. This year, Rama is honoured to host the LNHL Tournament alongside our Chippewa Tri-Council partners — Beausoleil First Nation and Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. Sydney’s success underscores the importance of opportunities like the LNHL in fostering excellence, building community, and inspiring future generations.

“Sydney’s achievement is a proud moment for all of Rama,” said Chief Ted Williams. “Her journey from the Little NHL to representing Canada on the world stage shows how far our youth can go with support and dedication. As we prepare to host this year’s LNHL Tournament, it’s a great reminder of how this event continues to inspire our young athletes to dream big.”

The Chippewas of Rama First Nation invite everyone to join us in cheering for Sydney and Team Canada as they compete in Finland.
