Run for Barrie sees Muslim youth help RVH (7 photos)

Around 100 runners in annual event helped support Barrie hospital's Keep Life Wild campaign with more than $6,000 raised, organizer says

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association hosted its Run for Barrie on Saturday morning, with proceeds supporting Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH).

The June 22 event began at Centennial Park on Lakeshore Drive and worked its way south and east along the bay.

The Run for Barrie is part of a nationwide initiative by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, which includes charity runs in various cities and towns across the country.

Ihtisham Ahmed, 22, chairman of the annual Barrie event, said he was pleased with the turnout, as the race was run ahead of the afternoon’s deluge of rain.

Around 100 runners were expected to participate across various categories, including one-, three- and five-kilometre runs.

This year, they are supporting RVH’s Keep Life Wild campaign.

“We have net proceeds of over $6,000 so far. We are hoping to get more,” Ahmed told BarrieToday just prior to the start of the run.

“In Canada … there are so many cultures, so many diverse traditions, so we’re just here to not only help the hospital foundation, but also to build bridges, and that’s why it’s important to me as well,” he added.
