Reports began circulating on social media Monday evening that the Ontario Hockey League's Barrie Colts have let go Warren Rychel as head coach.
Rychel, 52, was brought in as interim bench boss in September at the beginning of the OHL season as head coach Dale Hawerchuk battles stomach cancer. Hawerchuk recently underwent a successful surgical procedure.
The team confirmed this morning on its website that Rychel had been relieved of his duties on Monday.
Rychel — who played in the NHL throughout the 1990s and was the owner and general manager of the OHL's Windsor Spitfires from 2006 to 2019 — had a 16-21-2-2 record with the Colts, who are back in action Thursday night when they host the Oshawa Generals.
Longtime assistant coach Todd Miller will take over as interim head coach. The 41-year-old Elliot Lake native has been with the Colts since the 2010-11 season.
