This past weekend saw mixed results for the Simcoe County Rovers men’s and women’s teams, both having secured spots for League1 Premier division next season.
On the positive side, the women earned a valuable three points defeating St. Catharines Roma at J.C. Massie Field on Sunday night. After a massive win against Vaughan the previous week, the men fell short playing away at Scrosoppi, losing 3-2.
Coming off a dominant 7-0 win against ProStars, where Briane “Buckets” Desa netted a hat trick and goalkeeper Yazmeen Jamieson scored on a penalty kick, the women took to the field full of confidence looking for more goals and a crucial win at home. Striker Courtney Chochol returned to the squad and scored within 90 seconds of the game starting.
The Rovers got the start they needed and didn’t look back. Chochol went on to score in the 18th minute and again in the 69th minute giving her the hat trick and paving the way for a comfortable 3-0 win and six points from the last two games played.
Coach Dave Kelly knew St. Catharines would be a stiffer challenge than ProStars was.
“We were delighted to be up 1-0 inside of 90 seconds. We felt we controlled the game from start to finish and were excited for Courtney Chochol to score her second hat trick of the season. Now we turn our attention to the Electric City game on Wednesday.”
The men took to the pitch Sunday evening away at the Ontario Soccer Centre versus Scrosoppi looking to build on the momentum gained following the massive win against defending champions Vaughn at J.C. Massie Field. The Rovers came out flat and were outplayed by a hungry Scrosoppi squad in the first half falling behind 3-0.
To their credit, the Rovers battled back towards the end of the match with goals by defenders Tajay Reid and Cameron DaSilva but fell short losing 3-2. The team heads into a massive match against Guelph United at J.C. Massie Field with a 9-4-1 record.
“I thought we started well against Scrosoppi,” said coach Jason Beckford. “It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t build off the momentum that came after the win against Vaughan. Overall, we need to be more patient as a team and realize the game is 90 minutes long. But these lessons are part of the process and growing as a team. I have every confidence that this group will come back stronger the next game.”
The women’s game this Wednesday, July 19 at 6:30 p.m. takes on added importance as it’s the second and final match in the Trent Severn Cup, a unique second-year event that features a combined effort from both the men’s and women’s squads with the trophy being handed to the club with the best head-to-head combined scores. Should the score remain level after the men’s and women’s matches have concluded, the ultimate winner of the cup will be decided through penalties following the last match. The men won the first game in exciting fashion, coming back from a 1-0 deficit and winning 2-1, with the winning goal coming in the 90th minute.
The women travel to Waterloo on Saturday, July 22 to face BVB IA Waterloo and the men play Guelph United at J.C. Massie Field on Sunday, July 23.
