'Sweet victory': Young Colts string together championships

Local squad wins both A/BB Barrie Classic Tournament and Regional Silver Stick on back-to-back weekends

The Barrie Colts U12A team won the A/BB Barrie Classic Tournament and the 2023-24 Vaughan Regional International Silver Stick Tournament on consecutive weekends.

Following their championship win last weekend in the A/BB Barrie Classic Tournament, the Barrie Colts U12A team has once again emerged as champions. 

The team recently took part in the 2023-24 Vaughan Regional International Silver Stick Tournament, facing off against the Ted Reeve Thunder. Establishing and maintaining an early lead, the Colts secured a triumphant victory on Dec. 3 in this prestigious event, marking their second consecutive year as champions in the Regional Silver Stick.

After an intense series of five fast-paced and suspenseful hockey games, the team claimed the top position in their pool of the round-robin with a flawless 3-0 record. An impressive offensive performance saw them score 14 goals while only allowing two, earning them a spot in the semifinals. 

Demonstrating determination, the Colts overcame a two-goal deficit in the semis, equalizing in the third period. The team collaborated effectively, scoring seven minutes into the third and securing a sweet victory, propelling them to the final against the Ted Reeve Thunder.

In a closely contested match, the Colts secured an early goal in the second period, navigating through an intense competition where victory hung in the balance.  The Barrie boys exhibited unwavering effort, successfully preventing the Thunder from scoring, ultimately claiming a 1-0 win and earning the title of the 2023-24 Regional International Silver Stick champions.

Looking ahead, the Colts are preparing for the International Silver Stick Tournament in the upcoming year, where they will face teams from across North America. 

The Barrie team roster includes Cole Flachs, Cole Beaman, Daniel Soatto, Owen Rodney, Nick Girolametto, Harrison Parker, LJ Dewar, Jake Comeau, Luke Thompson, Maddox Smith, Zac Vanek, Maddox Koval, Ethan Elder, Jacob Davidson, Walker Greavette, Torin Schwartz and Matthew Vankrimpen. 

The committed team staff features head coach Jamie Vanek, trainer Don Rodney, assistant coaches Mike Soatto and Jason Schwartz, manager and Janice Smith.
