The Barrie Jr. Sharks, central Ontario’s premier competitive women’s hockey team, are thrilled to announce their U22 Elite League home opener on Sept. 22 at 12:30 p.m. at the East Bayfield Community Centre.

This year’s event goes beyond hockey — it’s about Operation #FILLtheTANK, a powerful community fundraiser for the Barrie Food Bank.

Admission to the game is simple: There’s no charge of entry but bringing a non-perishable food item to help support local families in need would be appreciated to support our drive. Every donation not only helps stock the Barrie Food Bank’s shelves but also demonstrates our community’s commitment to supporting young female athletes in their pursuit of excellence.

Why this game matters

The Barrie Jr. Sharks offer elite-level opportunities for young women who aspire to compete at higher levels, including university, college, and professional hockey leagues. As the pinnacle of women’s hockey development in Barrie and the surrounding regions, the Jr. Sharks provide high-calibre coaching, skill development, and crucial exposure to scouts. Supporting the Jr. Sharks is about more than just hockey — it’s about investing in the future of women in sports.

Historically, women’s hockey has received less funding and recognition compared to men’s programs, making it all the more essential to rally behind teams like the Jr. Sharks. By supporting this event, you’re not only empowering female athletes today but also helping to level the playing field for future generations. Their success represents a step forward for gender equality in sports and sends a powerful message to young girls: Your dreams matter, and you belong.
