The Huronia Stallions Varsity team improved to 3-0 on the season with a solid 27-9 victory over the Peterborough Wolverines.

Peterborough kept the game close in the first half with their physical style and strong special teams play which included a blocked punt for a touchdown. The game was tied at 7 until late in the first half when defensive coordinator Ed Shrubsole baited the Wolverines into a costly interception with a key play call. Lock down cornerback Jordan Travis took the interception to the endzone to make the score 14-7 at half.

The Stallions opened the game up in the second half and overcame an injury to quarterback Justin Winn to secure the victory. Winn completed 17 passes for 132 yards with one touchdown pass to receiver Will McCulloch and one interception before exiting. Backup quarterback Lukas Dold came in and threaded a beautiful touchdown strike to receiver Thomas Perri to ice the game for the Stallions. Running back Justin Janicki scored the other Stallions touchdown to round out the scoring.

The defence was led by defensive end Aiden Alfieri who had two sacks and one forced fumble. Other defensive highlights included the play of Ed Doyle and Nico Burton who both had quarterback sacks and Julian DiSabatino and Clayton Mrazek who had interceptions. The Stallions next game is this Sunday against a quality Etobicoke Eagles team that is also undefeated on the season.

Junior Varsity

The Huronia Stallions Junior Varsity team fell to 1-2 on the season with a 37-22 loss to the Peterborough Wolverines. The game was an ultracompetitive affair that saw the Stallions seize the momentum with a third quarter touchdown drive followed by a recovered onside kick by receiver/kicker Payton Plesh. Peterborough responded before Stallions running back Rio Campo dashed 70 yards before being tackled inside the ten yard-line.

Campo went down with a shoulder injury on the play but was picked up by the rest of the Huronia offence who scored to make the game 27-22 with five minutes remaining. The Stallions defence could not get a stop and Peterborough was able to get a quick strike and put the game out of reach. Plesh had a breakout game to lead the offence with two big touchdown receptions. Quarterback Will Howard settled down after adjusting to the fierce Wolverine pass rush to throw for three touchdowns including a sixty-yard strike to receiver Luca Burton.

The Stallions were led on defence by linemen Cole Rines who had a strong game on the interior and made several big plays. The JV defeat coupled with the Bantam team’s loss clinched the Cottage Cup for Peterborough. This trophy is awarded annually to the program that wins two or more of the games in a triple header.

The Stallions next game will be this Sunday in Etobicoke where they will face an unbeaten opponent.

Bantam

The Huronia Stallions Bantam team were defeated 38-0 by the Peterborough Wolverines to fall to 0-3 on the season. The Stallions will look to rebound this Sunday against the 0-2 Etobicoke Eagles.
