Elizabeth died peacefully at her home on Monday, July 8, 2024 at the age of 90.

Elizabeth, of Collingwood, was the beloved wife of the late Edgar (2015) for 52 years. Loving mother of Karen (Ken), Beverly, David (Kelly), Susan (Chris) and Ray (Cherrah). Cherished grandmother of Kate (Jeff), Kaitlyn, Jesse, Avery, Rose and Ryan and great-grandmother of Lincoln and Arizona. Dear sister of Lillian (the late Henry), Doreen, and the late Edward. Elizabeth will be missed by Edgar’s family Shirley (Bill), the late Sharon (Alex), and Ernie (Brenda), as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Elizabeth was born on a farm near Elk Point, Alberta to parents Andrew and Rose Kalyta. She would often tell stories about growing up helping on the farm, riding a horse in the spring/fall and a sleigh in winter to school if her father didn’t need the horses, as well as visiting family and neighbours. Elizabeth attended the Vermillion School of Agriculture, attending several school reunions over the years. She worked in Pacific BC for a CNR hotel before attending nursing school in Alberta where she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse. After working as a nurse in BC and Alberta, she attended Air Force Basic Training in Quebec but ultimately decided that following the rules of the Air Force was not for her and went back to her career in nursing. Elizabeth answered a nursing magazine ad to come to the Blue Mountains and beaches of Southern Georgian Bay to work at the Collingwood hospital. She then met her husband and settled in the Collingwood area to raise her family. Over the years, Elizabeth enjoyed reading, crafts, travelling, time spent with family and was proud of her Ukrainian heritage. She shared her love of Ukrainian cooking with her daughters, especially for Ukrainian Christmas Eve and Easter. She will be deeply missed.

Special thanks to Elizabeth’s caregivers, Stephanie and Sheri as well as daughter-in-law Cherrah for their compassionate care, allowing Elizabeth to remain in her home for her final years.

Friends are invited to join the family at the Chatterson Funeral Home, 404 Hurontario Street, Collingwood for visitation on Saturday, July 13, 2024 from 12 noon followed by the service in the chapel at 1 o’clock. Internment at Trinity United Cemetery. Donations in memory of Elizabeth to Diabetes Canada or a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
