It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Rein deVries, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, and friend, who left us peacefully on December 27th, 2024, at the age of 87, surrounded by his loving family.
Rein was born in the Netherlands to Eva and Rein deVries. In his mid-twenties, he embarked on a journey that would change his life, emigrating to Canada after traveling the world while working for Shell Oil during his university studies. It was in Canada where Rein would establish his home and career, dedicating 33 years to teaching high school in Hamilton, Ontario. His passion for education and his unwavering commitment to his students made a lasting impact on generations of young minds.
Beyond his professional life, Rein had a lifelong love for all things mechanical. He found great joy in his workshop, spending countless hours working on model trains, always accompanied by his cherished collection of classical music. His curiosity, creativity, and hands-on spirit were ever-present in his hobbies, and he shared this enthusiasm with everyone around him.
Rein leaves behind his devoted wife of 56 years, Karen; his daughters Deborah and Nancy; his son-in-law Steven; and his four adoring grandchildren, Jenna, Zee, Grace, and Isabelle and his dearly loved nieces and nephews in Canada. He was also a loving father to Harriette and Dan Dumouchel (Marianne), and Charlene Wristen. In addition, he will be missed by his many siblings, nieces, and nephews in the Netherlands all of whom held a special place in his heart.
Rein's kindness, warmth, and intellectual curiosity touched everyone he encountered. He had a rare ability to make friends wherever he went, and his generosity, wisdom, and sense of humor will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, compassion, and integrity will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to call him a friend or family.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and/or the Alzheimer Society, causes that were close to Rein’s heart.
Rein’s presence in this world will be greatly missed, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. May he rest in peace.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring.
