April 11, 1957 – December 21, 2024
Carol left this world peacefully. She leaves her two children, Jeff (Chrissy) and Kim (Tim), along with four grandchildren, Andy, Ben, Cora & Tommy.
Those who knew Carol likely recall the years before mental illness fully consumed her light. A time when her contagious, whole-body laughter often filled the room. A time when she was social, had friendships, and loved to play. Whether it be euchre, bridge, bowling, cheering for her kids at the ball diamond, or dancing to Elton, Bryan or Billy, Carol was ruthlessly competitive and so fun. She was fun, unless she got word there was cheating at play; for that, she held zero tolerance.
The last two decades were hard. Things shifted and the wounds of her life expanded beyond what she was capable of healing. The spark that once defined her had been gone for so long that it became difficult to remember a time when it guided many of us.
In the end, she died a good death. Her children were able to tell her they will be well; that it is okay to rest and be free of this body. Towards the end, she made it clear to us that she was ready. Given the tragedies of her life, there is peace in knowing her death was dignified and she was not scared.
It is in death, where she is finally free from pain and where we hope she can feel whole once again. We also hold hope that she can now feel the love so many of us held for her, a love she struggled to see while here.
We are in gratitude to the ICU team at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, Ontario, especially nurse Fraser, for bearing witness to her transition and holding space for her humanity. Thank you.
As per her request, there will not be a celebration of life. Instead, we ask that you honour Carol through doing the things we remember her loving when she had a zest for life. Play a game of cards and be ruthless in your play. Go for a game of bowling, just ensure it’s 5-pin. Dance away to your favourite tune, Old Time Rock n Roll being one of hers. Whatever you choose, we simply ask that you celebrate her by honouring your own precious life.
