Lloyd Fisher D.V.M.

It is with a heavy heart that the family announces the passing of Dr Lloyd Fisher, a respected veterinarian who practiced in Barrie for five decades.

Lloyd Daniel Fisher was born on St. Patrick’s Day in 1934 on the family farm in Normanby Township. He was the second of seven children born to Milton and Christine Fisher. Growing up, he worked on the farm and developed his love of animals, both large and small.
After completing high school in Hanover, Lloyd briefly worked refinishing furniture. Realizing that was not his calling, he relocated to Toronto, where he worked during the day and took night courses. In 1953, Lloyd enrolled in the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph and became a member of the Omega Tau Sigma fraternity.  While there, he met a lovely young lady on a blind date who had just arrived from British Columbia. After graduating in 1958, he went to work at the Barrie Veterinary Hospital.

Lloyd married his young lady, Evelyn Grinnell, in 1959. They welcomed three children: - Susan, Greg and Paul. In 1962, Lloyd and Evelyn bought the Barrie Veterinary Hospital, little realizing Lloyd would own it for 55 years.

Lloyd had a gentle soul, and animals trusted his calm manner. He spent many long hours travelling the country roads surrounding Barrie, visiting farms and caring for livestock. Lloyd was the veterinarian for Springwater Park, Elmvale Zoo and the Barrie Humane Society for many years, where he treated some unusual animals such as deer, bears, and peacocks, to name a few. In 1972, he sold the large animal side of his practice to concentrate on small animals.
Lloyd loved being a veterinarian and was committed to his work. He was the first to arrive at the clinic in the morning and the last to leave at night. He was always on call if he was needed, making many late-night and early-morning visits to the clinic to help a pet in need.

In 2009, Lloyd sold the clinic but continued working part-time until he was 79.  The University of Guelph Veterinary College granted him the honorary title Emeritus. After retiring, he became a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club in Barrie.  In 2016, Lloyd and Evelyn moved to Luther Village Retirement Residence in Waterloo to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
As his health started to decline in 2023, Lloyd moved into Columbia Forest Long Term Care home in Waterloo. The family extends their many thanks to the staff at Columbia Forest for their respectful care.

Lloyd is survived by his wife Evelyn of 65 years, Susan (John) Bain of Waterloo, Greg of Kitchener, and Paul (Dalia) of Erin. He had the love of three grandchildren, Spencer (Allison) Bain, Fraser Bain and Eva Fisher.  He is also survived by his brother Harold (Wilma) Fisher, and sister Merelda (Larry) Lantz.  Lloyd is predeceased by his brothers Aaron (Ima), Carl (Shirley), Ivan (Hilde, Betty), and his sister Mildred (Lloyd) Koch. He is lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
