It is with deep sorrow and gentle love that we announce the sudden passing of Floyd Percival Hall on July 24th, 2023 in his city of residence Barrie Ontario at the age of seventy-one.
Floyd was born to Ethel and Percy Hall in Kenora ,Ontario in 1951. From a young age Floyd discovered a love of music. Inspired by many mentors (including his father) Floyd pursued excellence in music. As a child he learned to play clarinet followed by many other instruments; his true passion was saxophone. Floyd pursued a music career as a performer, playing professionally by his mid-teens.
Floyd attended the School of Music, Brandon University Manitoba, leaving to perform with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra as an oboist. Despite his beginnings as a classical musician Floyd’s soul was Jazz. Floyd was an extremely talented and accomplished Jazz musician; those that had the fortune to hear him play know he was the best saxophonist in Canada. From the early 1970’s Floyd participated in the Canadian jazz scene notably in Manitoba and Ontario as saxophonist.
Floyd was a genuine and humble man who valued the mentorship he received during his career; in turn Floyd was a dedicated teacher, guiding many young musicians through the decades. Floyd joined the Air Command Band in 1982, attaining the rank of Warrant Officer and serving at Base Borden ON and Winnipeg MB. Following retirement Floyd continued his Military service, as a Reservist CPO2 with HMCS Chippewa MB. Throughout the years Floyd’s music career was expansive including service in the military; tours with a cruise line; Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra; independent musician and teacher.
Floyd enjoyed a good laugh and will be remembered for his silly and mischievous sense of humour. Floyd’s grandchildren, in particular, loved his visits because they knew they could make him laugh - a lot and that he would play the piano for hours - making it sing.
Floyd will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, fellow artists and performers, from all across Canada.
Family and friends are invited to attend Floyd’s celebration of life October 20th, 2023 1700-2300 at the British Arms Pub in Barrie, ON.
