ORO-MEDONTE - The Barrie and Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Crime Unit have made an arrest in relation to Child Pornography in the Township of Oro-Medonte.
Police were first notified on Aug. 24, 2018 of a voyeurism complaint. As a result of the original investigation the Orillia/Barrie Crime Unit charged John Macritchie, age 54, of Oro-Medonte, with voyeurism contrary to Section 162(1) of the Criminal Code. The male was released on a Promise to Appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia.
Police continued their investigation with the assistance of the OPP Child Sexual Exploitation Unit and Digital Forensic Unit. Police have now arrested and charged the accused with possession of child pornography contrary to Section 163.1(4) of the Criminal Code and another charge of voyeurism contrary to Section 162(1) of the Criminal Code.
A search warrant was conducted at a City or Barrie residence by OPP uniform members, Orillia and Barrie Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU). Police seized digital devices that are currently being examined to determine if further charges are warranted.
Police feel there is the potential for more victims in relation to the voyeurism or child pornography. If anyone has had contact with the accused and feel they might have information that would assist police in identifying victims or potential victims they are encouraged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or 705-326-3536.
The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing and has since been released on a recognizance. The accused is set to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia on Oct. 16, 2018.
