On Friday, officers with the Barrie police fraud unit said they are aware of text messages or calls people have been receiving from people claiming to be from Amazon.

The fraud scheme deals with links which are forwarded to potential victims with requests for money to be deposited into cryptocurrency accounts, according to police.

“The messages are claiming Amazon accounts have outstanding amounts which are required to pay off the bill,” police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday.

The links send people to a site which claims to provide additional information as to how much they owe and instructions on how to pay it.

Police suggest that If you get a text or call similar to this scheme, simply hang up or delete the text.
