ORIGINAL STORY

A Barrie police officer sustained “serious but non-life threatening injuries” after being stabbed while taking a male suspect into custody at a fast-food restaurant in the city’s north end Sunday.

Police were called to the McDonald’s at Bayfield and Livingstone streets shortly before 1 p.m. on Sept. 29 for a weapons-related call, confirmed Peter Leon, the department's communications co-ordinator.

Leon said the officer was injured while taking a man into custody, noting there was an “interaction” between an officer and the suspect.

“Thankfully, it’s not life-threatening. It was serious enough that he was taken to hospital and treated,” Leon told BarrieToday on Sunday afternoon.

The criminal investigation is ongoing and charges are pending against the suspect, a 39-year-old man of no fixed address, who is in custody.

BarrieToday will have more details as they become available.
