A 41-year-old man, who police are calling a “habitual offender,” has been arrested and charged following multiple thefts at a Barrie convenience store in recent weeks.

Barrie police received a call at 12:45 a.m. today about a male who was reportedly attempting to steal from the convenience store — located on the northeast corner of Anne Street North and Dunlop Street West.

When officers arrived at the store, they located the accused, who is of no fixed address, and arrested him for failing to comply with an undertaking and failing to comply with a probation order after which time he was taken to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued, noted Peter Leon, the police department’s communications coordinator.

The male, who had been involved in five previous thefts from the same store dating back to Oct. 10, has also been charged with theft under $5,000 from an incident Sunday afternoon, where police say a “quantity of alcohol had been stolen.”

The accused has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear today for a bail hearing, by video, with the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie.
