Barrie police had an unexpectedly low-key New Year’s Eve this year, with no major incidents to report, but they did have one unusual occurrence.

“We did get a call for a found wallet. Conveniently, the wallet did not have any identification in it, but it did contain some suspected illegal substances,” Peter Leon, the department’s communications co-ordinator told BarrieToday.

“We have retained the wallet for safe keeping and have been able to send some samples to Health Canada of what was (inside)," he added.

The lack of identification in the wallet was likely a good thing for the owner, Leon acknowledged.

“If they call or show up looking for it, things may be a little different for that individual," he said.

Aside from that, Leon said officers had a relatively quiet New Year’s Eve overall.

“(People were) pretty well behaved. I think the weather probably played a little bit of a role in that given the way things went from rain to snow to goodness what else in between," he said.
