Barrie resident charged with impaired driving at area marina

Ontario Provincial Police recently charged two people with driving impaired, including a Barrie resident.

The first was the result of a RIDE program set up on Highway 12 near Wye Valley Road on Thursday, Aug. 22.

At around 1:48 a.m., an officer suspected a driver of being impaired by drugs. 

The driver was brought to a drug recognition expert (DRE) officer at the OPP detachment.

Robert Belanger, 65, of Penetanguishene has been charged with operation while impaired (alcohol and drugs). He was also charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance and driving while under suspension.

Then at around 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, staff at a Tay Township marina called OPP to report what they suspected could be an impaired driver causing a disturbance.

Owen Kitsemetry, 48, of Barrie has been charged with operation while impaired (alcohol) and operation while impaired - blood-alcohol concentration (80 plus).

Both drivers had their licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicles were impounded for a week.

None of the allegations against either of the accused have been tested in court.
