A man has been arrested and charged in connection to a series of recent break-ins around Barrie.

Police say when the suspect was located, he was wearing the same clothing that had been captured in a surveillance video.

On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Barrie police investigated two break-and-enters at a plaza on the southeast corner of Anne and Dunlop streets. A third break-in had also been investigated shortly after 4:30 a.m. that morning in a nearby plaza located at 29 Anne St. S.

"From the investigations that followed, police were able to determine that an object had been thrown through the front door of each business, which caused the glass to break and allowed the offender to enter and exit the stores prior to police arrival," police stated in a news release.

"One of the involved businesses had video surveillance which not only captured the actions of the person responsible, but provided police with a description of who had committed these offences," stated the release.

Late Tuesday afternoon, police say detectives from the Barrie Police Service and South Simcoe Police Service break, enter and auto theft unit located the suspect in downtown Barrie and arrested him without incident.

At the time of his arrest, police say the man was wearing the same clothing that had been captured on video at the Anne-Dunlop plaza.

A 52-year-old Barrie man was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued.

"It was learned that the now accused was also responsible for a break-and-enter to a restaurant located in a plaza at 353 Duckworth St.," police said.

Police say this break-and-enter, which was also captured by surveillance video, occurred sometime after closing on Sunday, Sept. 29 and when staff arrived the following morning.

The accused has been charged with four counts of break and enter and was also wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for failing to abide by for his statutory release.

He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear by video on Oct. 8 at the Barrie courthouse.
