Canada Day weekend was relatively quiet in Barrie: Police

Officials say there were 618 calls for service, including 30 noise complaints and two impaired incidents during the three-day Canada Day weekend

It was a relatively quiet long weekend in Barrie that saw no major incidents, say Barrie police officials.

From Friday to the end of Sunday, Barrie police answered 618 calls for service including 214 on Canada Day (July 1), 222 more on July 2 and 182 on July 3.

Peter Leon, Barrie police communications co-ordinator, told BarrieToday Monday there were minimal impaired driving calls, but stressed one is too many.

“We had two impaired — one alcohol and one drug — and both occurred on Sunday,” said Leon. “I know some may see that as good and really low, but it is still dangerous and there is just never a need to drive impaired. We see all too often how these offences can end in death. We want to have zero occurrences of that nature.”

Leon said over the course of the weekend, there were only three liquor-related calls for service.

Calls for service is anytime the police are called for an incident, ranging from an intoxicated person, assault in progress, a noise complaint or any other time police are dispatched.

Leon said there were 30 noise complaints made from citizens from Friday to Sunday.

“This is obviously anything noise related: parties, loud music, loud cars. It was a long weekend and these calls are always expected,” said Leon. “Sometimes it's as simple as we have warm weather and windows are open, so people are hearing things more than usual. Often we attend a home to tell them they’re being too loud and the response we get is an apology and that they didn’t realize. It's usually rectified immediately.”

Leon credited the City of Barrie for making sure people are informed about exactly when they can set off fireworks, and reminded people the days they can are Victoria Day, Canada Day, New Year’s Day, and for the duration of the Lunar New Year and Diwali.
