Halloween is now upon us.
Children will be out and about this evening under the cover of darkness dressed in their costumes.
Drivers are reminded to slow down throughout the city and be extra aware of pedestrians.
Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon offers some advice to BarrieToday readers to ensure a safe Halloween night.
“(Children) are going going to be excited, they’re going to be having to wear extra layers and their attention level may not be where it’s at," he said, "so that’s why we tell people be very cautious, drive slower and if you see a lot of children at an area, reduce your speed accordingly.”
When it comes to the children's loot bags, always inspect what they receive prior to eating, Leon added.
“It’s most important to always check the candy as a parent,” he said. “Check before your child consumes, so when they get home, go through the bag, and if you see any packaging that is damaged or any loose candy, it’s best to get rid of it.”
Police safety tips:
- Avoid trick-or-treating alone by walking in groups or with a trusted adult. Parents should know the route that older children are going to take
- Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags or bring a flashlight to help drivers see you
- Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls
- Always walk (don't run) from house to house and look both ways before crossing the street
- Use established crosswalks and sidewalks wherever possible
- Only visit well-lit houses and do not enter a stranger’s home
- Never accept rides from anyone you do not know
- Carry emergency contact information
- And remember to have fun and be safe while out scaring homeowners tonight.
