A dog survived a shooting at a Whitchurch-Stouffville residence Friday night, thanks to the efforts of York Regional Police canine unit officers.
The homeowner heard a gunshot shortly after arriving home with his two dogs at about 9:40 p.m. June 14 in the area of McCowan Road and Bloomington Road, York Regional Police stated in a news release.
The dogs had exited his vehicle, started barking and ran to the side of the garage when the man heard the shot and then found one of the dogs injured, according to police.
Two male suspects, both dressed in dark clothing, were seen fleeing the scene, police say.
Canine unit officers administered first-aid to the injured dog, which was taken to a local animal hospital and is now in stable condition.
The unit was able to track the suspects to a nearby residence where it is believed they fled in a vehicle.
