It isn’t a broken heart but rather a broken “E” this time for the Heart Barrie sign along the city’s waterfront.
According to Barrie police, a group of four males and one female were seen May 22 on Dunlop Street East walking toward 5 Simcoe St. when one of the men reportedly kicked the sign, damaging the letter E.
The individual is described as having a short beard and he was wearing a long-sleeve black shirt with “Chicago” in white lettering across the front, black shorts with white patterns, black Under Armour sandals, and a light-coloured ball cap worn backward. The group was last seen on foot in the area of Maple Street.
City council added $15,000 to the city’s operations department budget, beginning this year, to cover costs of potential graffiti removal and winter maintenance on and around the sign.
This is the third time the sign has been damaged since it was installed July 1, 2022.
