Barrie police say they removed a 35-year-old man in possession of drugs from a downtown residence yesterday evening.

On Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., a Park Street resident arrived home to find an unknown man sleeping on his driveway near the garage, according to police.

The homeowner immediately contacted the police and, upon their arrival, the man was located lying in some bushes next to the driveway.

After confirming the man's identity, police determined he was wanted on a warrant for failing to comply with probation.

Police said the man, who is from Barrie, who was then arrested. While in custody, he was also found to be in possession of suspected fentanyl and a quantity of hydromorphone, police say.

The man was subsequently transported to police headquarters on Fairview Road for further investigation.

Later in the evening, the man was released on an undertaking after being formally charged with failing to comply with probation and two counts of possession of a Schedule 1 substance (opioid other than heroin).

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on Dec. 18.

The Barrie Police Service is reminding the public that “at any time an unknown person is located on your property, to do as this homeowner did, and to call the police.”

Police stress that “under no circumstances should you ever approach an unknown individual as your personal safety could be compromised should that person be in possession of a weapon, medically unstable or under the influence of drugs.”
