Loaded gun, knives and drugs seized during Barrie Road bust

A Barrie man, a Rama woman, and a Toronto man face multiple charges after cocaine, fentanyl and currency were discovered during traffic stop

Members of the Orillia detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police have arrested three suspects and seized a loaded handgun and a quantity of cocaine and fentanyl in the City of Orillia.

On June 16, 2021, shortly after 5:20 p.m., officers were on patrol on Barrie Road, when they began an investigation as a result of a Highway Traffic Act violation.

Subsequently, three suspects were arrested and searched and a loaded handgun and two prohibited knives were located. Further investigation resulted in the seizure of quantities of cocaine, fentanyl and Canadian currency.

As a result, John Cochrane, age 42, of Toronto, has been charged with:

  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Two counts possession of prohibited device or ammunition for dangerous purpose
  • Careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Transport firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm
  • Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was prohibited or restricted weapon
  • Possession of a firearm, prohibited or restricted weapon obtain by crime
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
  • Three counts possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - cocaine

In addition, James McCartney, age 36, of Barrie, has been charged with:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance- other drugs
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking- other drugs
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000
  • Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Transport firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm
  • Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
  • Possession of a firearm, prohibited or restricted weapon obtain by crime
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Two counts possession of prohibited device or ammunition for dangerous purpose
  • Three counts possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order
  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code
  • Identity theft - obtain or possess another person's identity information
  • Personation with intent - intent to gain advantage (identity fraud)
  • Four counts possession of an identity document
  • Drive motor vehicle, fail to display two plates

Furthermore, Samantha Oldfield, age 30, of Rama, has been charged with:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - cocaine
  • Three counts possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Transport firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm
  • Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
  • Possession of a firearm, prohibited or restricted weapon obtain by crime
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with

All three accused parties were held in custody for bail hearings on June 17, 2021, at the Ontario Court of Justice, Barrie.
