A man surrendered peacefully following a 16-hour standoff with Barrie police on Bayfield Street.
Shortly after 4 a.m. this morning, police say they were able to "safely apprehend the individual."
The 43-year-old Barrie man surrendered to police and was taken into custody without issue and was transported to hospital to receive medical attention.
The investigation is continuing this morning and charges against the individual are pending, police say.
The evacuation of nearby homes remains in place as police work to ensure the area is safe for the public to return, according to police.
Schools in the area are not affected and will open as usual.
The plaza is no longer closed and all businesses in the area are accessible.
"The Barrie police thank the public for their patience as we worked to bring a safe resolution to this situation, as well as to the OPP for their assistance in providing relief coverage for our members," police stated in a news release.
Police say more information will be provided only as the investigation permits.
Around noon on Tuesday, police say they received information about a possible firearm in a vehicle in a parking lot on Bayfield Street, near Heather Street.
No injuries were reported, but nearby parking lots and homes were evacuated "out of an abundance of caution," according to the news release.
The Barrie police tactical support unit was on scene, along with uniformed officers and crisis negotiators.
