One person has died after being struck by a train in Craighurst early this morning.
Orillia OPP were called to Horseshoe Valley Road near Craighurst, about 15 minutes northwest of Barrie, around 3 a.m. for a report of an individual walking near the train tracks.
OPP officers, along with CN Rail officials, Simcoe County paramedics and Oro-Medonte Township firefighters arrived at the scene after reports of someone having been struck by a train, however the individual was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The roadway was closed for several hours between Penetanguishene Road and Horseshoe Valley Road West, and both the northbound and southbound off-ramps were closed during the investigation. They were reopened around 8:30 a.m.
One local resident, who was on his way to work just before 7 a.m., told BarrieToday that when he approached the tracks he found the area “blocked by officers and barricaded,” adding the rail crossing arms were engaged and the train was stopped on the tracks.
