COLLINGWOOD —The 19-year-old accused of making a threat against the people at Collingwood Collegiate Institute (CCI) is now facing more serious charges, including attempted murder, following new information uncovered by police in the investigation.
Provincial police say the latest charges were prompted by a search of an electronic device seized from the accused's home that allegedly uncovered an "elaborate" and "well-researched" plan to harm students.
Jordan Young, of Clearview Township, was arrested on Sept. 11, 2024, after police received a report about a threat made against the school.
According to police reports at that time, the threat was made in March 2024, but not reported until Sept. 11, 2024.
Police say officers searched the former student's home and found two firearms, several high-capacity magazines. According to police, the weapons and ammunition were "improperly stored" and without a valid firearms licence.
Young was arrested after police found him parked in a lot on Cameron Street, which was confirmed not to be the school parking lot.
While arresting Young, police say they seized two replica firearms, bear spray, pepper spray, a knife and brass knuckles.
"Thank you to everyone who provided information about this threat. Your actions have helped protect students and staff from potential harm," stated OPP Det. Insp. Sean Chatland.
"The upgraded charges show the magnitude and seriousness of this investigation," Chatland added. "Though the charges have been upgraded, this investigation remains ongoing and we urge anyone with additional information to contact the OPP."
The latest list of charges against Young include:
- Attempted murder
- Attempt to commit an assault with a weapon
- Possession of a firearm — two counts
- Possession of a prohibited device — three counts
- Careless storage of a firearm — two counts
- Unlawful possession of ammunition — three counts
- Weapons dangerous — three counts
- Possession a prohibited device for a purpose dangerous to the public peace — three counts
None of the allegations have been tested in court.
The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on Jan. 20.
Police say they are working with the Simcoe County District School Board and CCI administration to provide victim support.
The investigation is continuing under the direction of the OPP's Criminal Ivestigations Branch.
Investigators are urging anyone with information to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
