The two teenagers charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 17-year-old Barrie boy back in November 2021 were in court today to begin their preliminary hearing process.
Tuesday’s hearing lasted much of the day and was adjourned until Wednesday.
All evidence presented in court today is subject to a publication ban to protect their right to a fair trial.
The identities of the two accused are also protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, as is the name of the victim.
The 17-year-old male victim was shot and killed at a River Ridge Road home on Nov. 19, 2021. He was pronounced dead outside the home.
One of three teenagers accused of murder in the fatal shooting has already pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.
Alexander Craggs, who was 18 at the time, had been charged along with the two 17-year-old boys with first-degree murder.
Craggs, who was charged as an adult, pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact of murder on Dec. 13, 2022. He's scheduled to be sentenced in March 31.
Residents of the southeast Barrie neighbourhood where the teen was killed said they heard a series of blasts early that Friday evening in 2021 near Golden Meadow Drive, which backs onto Hurst Drive.
A heavy police presence soon followed as Barrie police officers combed the neighbourhood for witnesses and to collect evidence.
