A south-end Barrie resident awoke Thursday morning to find their sport-utility vehicle had been stolen sometime overnight.

City police responded to the home on Bishop Drive, near Ardagh Road and Ferndale Drive, shortly before 7 a.m. on Thursday, July 18 after receiving a call from the homeowner.

From the investigation that followed, police say a key for the SUV had been left in another vehicle, which was believed to have been locked.

Later in the day, Barrie police say they were contacted again after the owner of the stolen vehicle had located her SUV utilizing technology that was available through the manufacturer.

Police attended the dead end of Edgehill Drive, east of Anne Street, and met with the owner’s spouse, who was with the recovered stolen vehicle.

The SUV was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters for a forensic examination.

"Although this incident concluded with the stolen vehicle being located, it would appear as if some loose change was the only property that was stolen," police stated in a news release.

Barrie police is reminding the public that any vehicle that must be parked outside on your driveway or in front of your home, should always be left locked and to make sure that no keys are ever left behind.

"Members of our community are also reminded that while you sleep, there are people who are looking for opportunities that they can benefit from," police say. "By always locking your car and not leaving valuables behind, or leaving anything in clear view, you will be taking the necessary steps to not become a thief’s next victim."
