Local law firm Ferguson Deacon Taws LLP (FDT Law) have relocated into a brand-new office to better serve their clients. The new space, located at 282 King Street in Midland, went under extensive renovations before the firm moved in in August.
“With purchasing the new building, we were able to renovate it exactly into what we wanted and needed,” says Jennifer Goldsmith, associate lawyer and notary with FDT Law.
While the firm is located in Midland, their lawyers who cover personal injury litigation travel all over Ontario for claims. Each one has an area of the province that they service. Jennifer says that being in Midland, a rather central location, has always been convenient for them to see clients in person.
Ferguson Barristers and Deacon Taws had both been in Midland for decades before they merged on January 1, 2018, becoming FDT Law. It is a full-service firm, with certified specialists in estate litigation, civil litigation, and trusts. They’ve won awards specifically for real estate law, as well as personal injury litigation.
Jennifer’s work mainly consists of real estate transactions and estate work, both of which she finds meaningful. “I get value out of every client I see— everything is different. Getting to see someone close their first home and see how excited they are.”
“And when people decide to get their will done, by the end of it they breathe a sigh of relief that they got it done,” she adds. “I’m a huge proponent of getting your will done. It’s so important.”
For Michael Laplante, who is a certified specialist in civil litigation at the FDT Law, it’s important to him that they are able to provide people in smaller communities with the level of expertise that you find in bigger cities.
Working in smaller communities is partly why the FTD Law team has a personable, approachable demeanour. While the lawyers are knowledgable and detail-oriented, they also believe in being personal with their clients and getting to know them. This makes the experience of seeking out legal advice less intimidating.
“Dealing with lawyers can be super daunting,” says Michael.
“We want clients to walk out thinking, ‘thank heavens they were able to help me with what I needed,’ not thinking about fees,” Jennifer adds.
One online review from a client raves about her experience. “Highly recommend for all your legal needs. Staff were courteous and replied quickly to phone calls and emails. Hassle free and got the job done quickly and efficiently, which made life easier with one less thing to worry about.”
Now settled into their new space, the FDT Law team is looking forward to the future, continuing to make their clients’ legal needs less of a burden.
