On October 27th, families will walk through the autumn leaves to raise money for Down Syndrome Association of Simcoe County and their vital programming.

The event is called “Step Up For Down Syndrome Fun Walk,” and funds go towards the organization’s recreation programs, social events, community awareness initiatives, and bursaries that DSASC’s families rely on. The overarching goal of all that the charity does is to improve and celebrate the lives of their members living with Down syndrome.

“These initiatives empower individuals with Down syndrome, foster inclusion, and celebrate their unique abilities,” says Hillary Thomas, Program and Communications Coordinator for Down Syndrome Association of Simcoe County.

DSASC’s many social events and programs include bowling, dance, Taekwondo, crafts, cooking classes, “Wee Ups and Downs playdates” for young children, and a young adults day program. They also host annual events like Pumpkinfest, a Christmas party, and a summer picnic. The charity has a lending library of free books for Down syndrome education, as well as bursaries for speech, music, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and education workshops.

The Step Up For Down Syndrome Fun Walk starts at Tiffin Centre for Conservation in Utopia, Ontario. Participants should aim to arrive at 1PM and the event is expected to end around 3PM. First on the agenda is a group photo to commemorate the day, followed by a relaxed stroll around the scenic pond at the Tiffin Centre. Afterward, walkers till return to the pavilion to socialize and enjoy delicious pizza.

There are different ways for interested parties to participate, says Hillary.

“DSASC’s goal is to raise $9,000 to support our vital programs. We encourage teams to fundraise, but it's not mandatory to participate in the walk. Every contribution, big or small, makes a real difference.”

“Your participation and generosity make these programs possible.”

If individuals are unable to join the October 27th event, they can participate and fundraise “Walk Your Way”-style. This means walking at your own pace and location anytime during Canadian Down Syndrome Week, which is October 20-26, 2024.
