The cannabis flower and its derivatives can do a lot of things, but people use cannabis for all kinds of reasons other than a recreational high.
More and more, folks take cannabis to treat ailments like general discomfort, help with sleep, and mood management.
They’re finding the cannabis flower to be a powerful tool in their arsenal to care for a variety of conditions.
All too often, The House of Cannabis has customers asking for recommendations to help them sleep at night, or for products that can help take the edge off and get a little pain relief. People from all walks of life and age brackets have discovered cannabis as a new alternative.
Gillian Marsden is the manager of The House of Cannabis in Barrie and has some recommendations for those looking to add some cannabis in their regiment to provide some solace from their issues.
“If they just want flower, definitely an indica or an indica hybrid. If they’re not interesting and smoking of vaping cannabis, we have edibles that are good for nighttime,” Marsden said.
“We have oils you put under your tongue; they’re sublingual, so they set into your bloodstream right away. So, it’s as fast as smoking it, but you don’t have to smoke it.”
One of the “nighttime” products in the store is Monjour Bare Blueberry Lemon gummies. These have 20 milligrams of CBD and 7.5 milligrams of CBN to help calm the body and mind before bedtime.
The brand Pearls has a Blackberry Lemonade gummy that has equal parts of two milligrams of CBD, CBN and THC. It all depends on someone’s metabolism, but Marsden advises to take nighttime edibles about an hour before bed, since they can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour to kick in.
“CBN and CBD have been a good combination for nighttime routines,” Marsden said. “CBN helps slow down busy brain. If you’re the type of person where your brain gets really busy when your head hits the pillow, CBN will help calm that down. CBD relaxes the body and CBN relaxes the brain.”
There is still a devout subset of cannabis users who do it just for the recreational aspect, but a growing portion of Canadians are experimenting with cannabis for its naturopathic benefits.
Smoking, vaping, ingesting or drinking weed to get high only makes up a small percentage of total cannabis use today. However, there’s still somewhat of a stigma associated with cannabis use. With a bit of education, more are learning about the power of cannabis and how they can use it to help themselves.
“If we could at least get people to the point of understanding that CBD and CBN can actually help you out without getting you high, I think that will help bring a lot of people on board,” Marsden said. “There are so many options and so many different ways you can take it and different reasons you can take it.”
