Come join the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County for a Kick Off to one of its most important events: the Walk for Alzheimer’s.
The Walk for Alzheimer’s takes place throughout the entire month of May. The Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County is inviting all of us to walk 11,000 steps in May: one step for each person living with Alzheimer’s or dementia in Simcoe County. This is a chance for participants to sign up, fundraise, pledge, and walk in support of all those who live with Alzheimer’s and other dementias across the County.
The special kick off to this event will be on Sunday April 30, starting at 10:00 a.m. in the beautiful Town of Collingwood.
Comfort Keepers are the special sponsor of this event and all attending on April 30th are asked to meet at their location: 281 First St. Unit 4, in Collingwood. All are invited to join together, connect, share stories, and take a walk on the nearby trail to kick off the Alzheimer Society’s walk event in support of over 11,000 individuals in Simcoe County currently living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias.
For each of these individuals, there are on average three care partners. Overall, tens of thousands of individuals are impacted by dementia in Simcoe County, and events like walk are key to supporting awareness, education and fundraising.
Following the Collingwood Kick Off on April 30th, Simcoe County to ‘walk where you are’ through the month of May to raise awareness and pledges leading up to main Walk for Memories event on May 28th.
“The kick off event in Collingwood is a way to start off strong and celebrate and recognize those participating in the Walk for Alzheimer’s in Simcoe County,” said Katie McIsaac, Digital Communications Manager for the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County. “We hope everyone can join us and help raise awareness of this event and this disease,” she added.
The May walk will finish off with a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Walk for Alzheimer’s in Simcoe County. On Sunday May 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., walk the gorgeous trails and enjoy a fun-filled family day with refreshments, entertainment, and more, all at the Simcoe County Museum located at 1151 Highway 26, Minesing.
“There will be an accessible indoor walk and an outdoor walk through the museum grounds, vendors, merch, free giveaways, refreshments, and more,” said McIsaac. “Many of our community partners will be there and we hope for a great turnout to give people a chance to meet others in their community and support one another,” she added.
The May 28 event will be the finale to the Walk and a chance for everyone to meet their 11,000-step goal as well. “Participants can walk throughout the month of May, or meet on May 28 and do their walk then,” said McIsaac. “We want everyone to be able to participate.”
