Jack Garner made extensive contributions to the community spanning the realms of sports, education, mental health and tourism.

Garner’s political career included a seat on Barrie’s city council from 1966 to 1970, where he championed the Centennial Park project.

This transformative initiative converted the industrial area around Kempenfelt Bay into a beloved recreational space, expanding beaches and trails that residents cherish today.

As his son Jeff Garner reflects, “he truly loved Barrie and dedicated his life to making it a better place. His efforts spanned many roles and he carried that passion throughout his lifetime.”

Garner also played a crucial role in securing GO train service, improving transportation and connectivity for Barrie.

“When someone passes away, their contributions often fade into memory, but Centennial Beach and the GO train are still here, thriving. The beach has grown and the train service just keeps getting better. His efforts are finally being acknowledged all these years later,” his son adds.

Beyond politics, Jack Garner was actively involved in provincial and federal elections, leading local young Conservatives and serving as president of the city’s Progressive Conservative association.

Although often considered a candidate himself, he chose to focus on his family business, Garner Sports store, and community activities, including his leadership in the Barrie Rotary Club.

A committed Rotarian and chair of the downtown board, Garner also contributed to local sports management and was involved with the Barrie Chamber of Commerce and the Ontario Economic Council.

“Many of the people he worked with are no longer around, so the timing of this recognition is fantastic. There are still those who remember my dad and the impact he had,” Jeff shared.

In his honour, a foundation has been established to support youth in sports, mental health and education.

“Even during his struggles with health, especially during the isolation of COVID in the retirement home, my dad and I created the Jack Garner Foundation. We took some of his resources to support community initiatives he cared about,” Jeff explains.

“Now, I can continue that mission in his honour, focusing on education, youth and mental health. Good mental health is essential for success in everything they want to achieve,” Jeff emphasizes.

Jack's dedication to community service earned him numerous accolades, including the Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International and the Barrie Citizen of the Year award.

His outspoken advocacy on critical issues and civic engagement have left an indelible mark on Barrie.

As we remember Jack Garner, his legacy of leadership and community spirit continues to inspire those who strive to make a difference in the lives of others.
