The May Court Club of Barrie has stood as a beacon of support and generosity in the community.
With over $3 million donated as a registered charity and countless volunteer hours dedicated each year, its members work tirelessly to uplift women, children, men and the elderly.
"I was quite surprised to hear about the May Court Club of Barrie being awarded this,” shared volunteer Marianne Schall. “We have applied in the past to a few awards but have always lost out to the very charities we support, making it difficult to get upset since they are important, too."
This year alone, their contributions to local organizations have ensured that those in need receive the vital assistance they deserve.
The Club's impact is evident through a diverse range of projects addressing various community needs.
They have supported the Down Syndrome Association of Simcoe County in helping young adults gain independence, provided crucial funds for families facing housing challenges and assisted local charities focused on food security and essential services for seniors.
"Winning the Unsung Hero Award means that our community partners acknowledge the tireless work that our volunteers do. Our goal is to raise funds for those in need in our community," shared Shall.
Additionally, their scholarship programs empower students pursuing post-secondary education, paving the way for future generations to thrive.
The May Court Club’s achievements are made possible by the unwavering dedication of its members, organized into various committees that ensure smooth operations.
"We are a passionate group, each member bringing their own talents and experiences,” explained Shall. “Our high level of communication helps us make a real impact, whether it's contributing to a wheelchair or providing scholarships to deserving students."
The May Court Shop, a consignment store run entirely by volunteers, plays a pivotal role in funding these charitable initiatives while fostering a strong sense of community among visitors.
"The outfit I am wearing to the awards ceremony will come from the May Court Shop, of course, because we have great holiday and event wear," exclaimed Shall.
"Our next goals are to increase membership, continue to be creative with fundraising, present the May Court Shop like a boutique and enhance our social media reach," shared Shall.
Among the Club’s most cherished events is Homes for the Holidays, a beloved tradition that brings the community together to celebrate and raise funds.
"The May Court Club of Barrie cannot exist without the support of customers who shop at the May Court Shop and buy tickets for our largest fundraiser. Our member volunteers give their time to support the City of Barrie's social needs, especially when most have no government funding.”
Throughout the year, smaller community events help strengthen connections with residents and further the Club’s mission of support.
At the heart of The May Court Club lies a profound commitment to helping others and fostering a sense of belonging.
They believe that every act of kindness makes a difference and their legacy reflects the deep care and compassion that define this community.
