The Black Fathers Alliance as part of Parents Against Racism Simcoe invites Black fathers to join their confidential, peer-led support group.

The group is designed to empower Black fathers and allow for a place to share the unique challenges they face.

“My main goal is to empower Black fathers and help them create unbreakable bonds with their children,” shared chair Daniel Carter. “We help fathers navigate the school system, gain knowledge about family court, child protection services and the legal system.”

This group setting will allow Black fathers to connect and share their unique experiences in a safe space.

Mental health resources, strategies to combat anti-Black racism, guidance on adjusting to life in Canada and tactics for addressing workplace discrimination are topics to be covered.

“Black fathers are not given a fair shot, not listened to and dismissed quickly. The sharing of these experiences can help combat, overcome and outsmart the racists. Black fathers need to know their rights,” explained Carter.

Carter, a father of four boys, including a 10-month-old, is passionate about the group.

“Fathers need to learn to talk about racism with their children and the impact it has,” he stated. “Children need to face (racism) now, not later.”

The Black Fathers Alliance aims to grow with more events and guest speakers such as mental health professionals in the future.

In order to do so, they need Black fathers to participate by signing up.

Support group sessions are offered in person and virtually starting June 13 (in-person) and June 20 (virtually).

The Black Fathers Alliance is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
