For more than 40 years, the Women and Children’s Shelter of Barrie has provided vital programs and services to the community, ensuring all women have a safe place to escape the cycle of violence.

In addition to the 27 beds available at the shelter, the organization provides individual and group counselling, legal information and support, resources about violence against women and referrals to additional community and social services.

“We assist approximately 1,000 women and children annually,” said Deb James, community development manager at the Women and Children's Shelter of Barrie.

“We would love to work ourselves out of a job, but as long as the need is large, we are here,” said James.

In alignment with its ongoing work in our community to empower women, the shelter is set to host a luncheon event on March 8, 2023 in honour of International Women’s Day.

This year's luncheon will consist of shopping vendors, a catered lunch, a silent auction and keynote speaker, Jayne Pritchard.

All proceeds from the event will be directly donated to the shelter’s programs and services.

“This is the first luncheon in person since the pandemic”, said James. “It is so exciting to come together and be social.”

The shelter's annual International Women's Day March for Equality will follow the event that evening.

Beginning at Barrie City Hall, the participants will march together through the streets of downtown Barrie in support of women’s rights and equality.

“This is a chance for the community to get together, be loud, be proud and show support to all women in our lives”, said James.

Looking for ways to support the shelter? Community members are welcome to donate, purchase event tickets, and apply for volunteer opportunities

Donated items from the wish list such as groceries, diapers, formula, bedding and feminine hygiene products are always appreciated.
