Shak’s World, a community centre with a mission to create respectful and successful athletes and citizens, opened its doors in November 2021.
The centre was created by Shak Edwards, who has 15+ years of experience in the basketball world at various levels, in an effort to support sports development and community engagement while bringing awareness to youth mental and physical health.
Programs at the community centre include summer camps, art, basketball, yoga as well as gym and court rentals for youth aged seven to 17. Additionally, all program leads are under the age of 29, which helps to promote leadership in athletes and coaches within that age group. Beyond that, Shak’s World is also a safe space for BIPOC youth of the Simcoe County area to come and hang out 365 days a year.
Shak’s World takes a unique and innovative approach to sports, seeing participation in physical activity as a catalyst for personal growth and an opportunity for participants of any skill level to strengthen themselves mentally, emotionally and physically.
Programming at the community centre helps to promote hard work, accountability and improve youth-self esteem.
The Sports and Recreation Award is presented to an individual who has contributed to the strength of a sport in the community, by way of inspiring people, establishing a program, mentoring a team or individual to extraordinary accomplishments, or setting an example for others to carry.
Congratulations to Shak Edwards and the team at Shak’s World!
