Those passing by the Anne Street Beer Store may notice a little fry truck that has become more than just a destination for hungry people looking for a quick, tasty meal in Barrie.
“We have an amazing following who enjoy our company as well as our food,” said Marian Gomboc, co-owner of the popular Gomboc's Jumbo Hot Dog along with her husband, Stan.
She told BarrieToday that a warm and friendly atmosphere is an essential part of Gomboc’s food truck story.
“A little conversation even when you are lined up, and when you remember them next time it means everything. They leave with a smile and always return," Gomboc says.
Like other food trucks, Gomboc's Jumbo Hot Dog benefits greatly from word of mouth.
“The usual comments are ‘our friend recommended your burgers or back bacon or whatever they have enjoyed.’"
When asked what customers most frequently compliment at Gomboc’s, she answered: “Quality of product fresh off the grill, fresh buns, speedy friendly service, and a wide selection of toppings. Also, excellent prices!”
More importantly, it’s worth noting that Gomboc’s Jumbo is run by two passionate people who love their day-to-day routine.
“You need to have a passion for what you do and people are just so happy and appreciate genuine service,” says Gomboc, who moved from Barrie to Washago four years ago and commutes daily.
Marian and Stan have been in the food business for many years since they started their first restaurant venture, Venice Pizza in Ajax, when they were first married.
“After our children were grown, we decided to open a hot-dog business at the Canadian Tire in Alliston, which was extremely successful.”
She says they sold the Canadian Tire location after eight years to take a three-year break for family commitments.
“And here we go again at our current location in Barrie for the past 11 years.”
Looking back on those years, Gomboc fondly recalls enjoying the experience of working with the public.
“We have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful individuals over the years, including the homeless people in our area who have a special place in our hearts," she says.
With a ton of regulars, Gomboc is optimistic about the food truck’s prospects and what the future holds.
“We have a continuous flow of newcomers as the word spreads, not to mention the delicious aroma of fresh barbecue in the area," she says.
Gomboc's Jumbo Hot Dog is located at the corner of Anne and George streets in Barrie, south of Dunlop Street.
