Barrie’s General John Hayter Southshore Community Centre will be transformed with the vibe of authentic Indian culture next weekend.

Residents are invited to join in Barrie's first Vedic Deepawali, Festival of Lights, presented by Barrie Bhakti Youth Cultural Centre, on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 4-8 p.m.

The free event is aimed at creating awareness and to support culture awareness, noted organizers. While tickets are not needed, they do recommend people RSVP as space is limited and they are planning a large feast.

“This Diwali is special due to (the) inauguration of Ayodhya temple and (the) return of Lord Raam Ayodhya after a long 500-plus years of dispute … therefore, we are celebrating homecoming of Prabhu Ram in an unforgettable way in Barrie,” Naina Sharma, lead for the Barrie Bhakti Youth Cultural Centre, said in a news release.

The evening will include flower bathing of Lord Ram, Diwali rituals, the opportunity for guests to learn the science behind rituals, Deepdaan — offering ghee lamps, a Sattvik Vegetarian Feast, cultural performances  and a performance of Ramleela by the Barrie Bhakti Youth Club.
