“I see this announcement as a huge step forward in downtown revitalization," said Mayor Jeff Lehman.

Georgian College President MaryLynn West-Moynes announced on Wednesday that the college will open a downtown campus, moving several hundred Design and Visual Arts students into Barrie’s core.
The college has issued a request for proposal (RFP) seeking to lease up to 20,000 square feet of space, including modern training rooms and retail space in a high-visibility downtown location.
Starting September 2017, approximately 250 students will begin their studies in the new space. Programs will include all years of Digital Photography and Imaging, Digital Video, Graphic Design and Graphic Design Production.
“It brings great opportunities to our students and the city – everyone benefits," said MaryLynn West-Moynes.
"The programs selected are well aligned with Barrie’s focus on innovation and the creative digital economy. Students will work even more closely with professionals in their field and their studying, living and spending will pour new energy into the downtown core.”
The college is looking for a building with a storefront location where students' work can be featured and sold to the public.
Lehman says the work to bring Georgian downtown began several years ago, a vision of former college president Brian Tamblyn.
"I am absolutely delighted," Lehman said.
"Downtown is rapidly becoming the location of choice for creative industries and visual and performing arts. This project will help take that evolution to the next level."
Having several hundred creative students, and their faculty and staff, in the downtown will also provide a boost for downtown shops and services. Most of all, for these students, they will have a funky new downtown location for their learning. I think this will help the School of Design and Visual Arts offer a unique learning environment, allowing them to continue attracting top students and faculty.
