Georgian Grizzlies men’s basketball players Tyler Vanessen and Anthony Meggo earned a pair of awards to begin the 2019 belairdirect OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship being hosted by Georgian College in Barrie.
The awards ceremony took place at the Championship Banquet which took place Thursday morning to kick off the tournament festivities.
Vanessen, was named to the OCAA east division first all-star team. He led the Grizzlies in scoring this season averaging 18.4 points-per-game while also leading the team in minutes played this season. On the defensive side of the ball he also led the team in rebounds (166) and in blocks (11).
The Whitby native finished 10th in the OCAA with 367 points scored on the season, while his 8.3 blocks-per-game were 13th overall in the OCAA. It is Vanessen’s second time being named an OCAA all-star as he made the east division’s second team back in 2016-17.
Meggo, was named to the OCAA east division second all-star team. He finished the season second on Georgian in scoring averaging 17.9 points-per-game. He was also first on the team in assists averaging 3.6 per-game and was third in steals averaging 1.8 per-game.
The Whitby native finished 14th overall in league scoring, 15th in assists and 21st in steals in the OCAA. This is his first OCAA all-star selection.
The Grizzlies will play the first match of the Championship on Thursday night when they face the Humber Hawks at 8 p.m. at the Georgian Athletic Centre. Tickets are available for the general public at the doors.
