COVID-19 has nothing on the Barrie Public Library’s 5th annual Comic Con.

Unstoppable superheroes will once again gather, but this year the Library will be hosting them in a daylong virtual celebration Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.. Online events will feature cosplay discussion panels, live illustrator demos from the Drawing House, comic book artist presentations and a vendor market with links to local merchants.

Activities and attractions have been organized for all ages, from a Superhero Storytime - for your little action figures - to a Brick Awesome LEGO build session.

The public is invited to explore a cosplayer prop making workshop with Winston Cooper of Nuff Props, or to get creative and design a dragon egg and wand for casting a magical spell.

Local virtual vendors will have gaming and superhero-related art, jewelry, comic books, crafts and clothing for sale on their sites for collectors and fans: a great opportunity to support local small business.

“Superheroes are everywhere, they are no longer just on the pages of comic books,” says Sandra Sydor, Manager of Community Engagement at the library.

“This year we’ve seen so many local heroes serving those in need in our community. We want our virtual BPL Comic Con to reflect our new reality, so we have invited local artist and comedian Daniel Shaw to present his first caped hero ‘The Social Distancer’, a small yet mighty action figure that likes to keep his distance. We also have returning digital artist Loc Nguyen, local artisan Kristen Kiomall-Evans and Andre Campbell, author of sci-fi adventure series Starkeeper.”

Liz Kerr, Branch Librarian, adds, “With our library facilities re-opening for browsing, we are so happy to welcome back our community. Exploring our wide collection of print and digital comics can be a great way to get kids or teens interested in reading and our digital library offers online comic books that can be downloaded to your device, all you need is a library card to get started.”
