Baycats spread around the offence as Barrie sweeps Burlington

Baycats await their second-round opponent in Intercounty Baseball League playoffs

BARRIE – The Barrie Baycats moved closer to another IBL title after sweeping the Burlington Herd in the first round of playoffs. 

Barrie put the series away with a 9-2 win Sunday night at Coates Stadium. 

Branfy Infante and Glenn Jackson each drove in two for the Baycats, who will face Hamilton in the semifinal. Kevin Atkinson and Tim Smith had two hits and an RBI apiece, while combining to score three runs. Jeff Cowan had an RBI, and Starlin Rodriguez, Kyle DeGrace and Steve Lewis all had a hit and a run. 

Santos Arias (1-0) went 8.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on 12 hits with a walk and 12 strikeouts. 

Robbie Cant singled three times and drove in a run for the Herd. Cooper Lamb had three hits and a run, Reese O'Farrell went 2-for-4 with a run, Justin Gideon added two hits, and Daniel Ohorodnyk had an RBI. 

Casey Bouillere-Howard (0-1) took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out one.

Bowie's blast knocks out Majors

HAMILTON – Connor Bowie's three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth gave the Hamilton Cardinals a walkoff 7-5 win Sunday afternoon over the London Majors in Game 4 of their best-of-five quarter-final at Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium. 

Hamilton, ranked sixth heading into playoffs, eliminated the third-place Majors 3-1. 

Laine Renaud went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, Jake Foden scored three times and had three hits, including a single to start the ninth-inning rally. 

Chris Beer and Jon Dziomba each had an RBI, and Jacob Martins added two hits. 

Chris Lazar (2-0) threw two innings of relief for the win. He gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits with a strikeout.

Tyler Howard started and went six innings, giving up two runs on three hits with seven walks and eight strikeouts.

For London, Byron Reichstein went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Chris McQueen and Carlos Arteaga each had an RBI and scored once, and Michael Ambrose drove in a run. 

London had taken a 5-4 lead with three runs in the eighth but couldn't extend the series to five games. 

Kelvin Pichardo (1-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits with two strikeouts in an inning. 

Majors starter Robert Doyle gave up four runs (two earned) on four hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out one. 

Royals hang on for Game 3 win

TORONTO – The Guelph Royals hung on for a 7-6 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 3 of their best-of-five quarter-final Sunday afternoon at Christie Pits. 

Guelph leads the series 2-1. 

Angel Villalona singled, homered and had three RBI and two runs. Justin Interisano went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run, Jon Waltenbury scored twice, Sean Reilly had two hits and a run, Brendan Keys singled twice and drove in a run, and Liam Hicks added an RBI. 

Edwin Javier (1-0) went eight innings for the win, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits with five walks and seven strikeouts. He was lifted in the ninth after two walks to start the bottom half of the inning. Both batters came around to score as David Hatt scattered a pair of hits to collect the save. 

Marcus Knecht and Zac Orchard each had two hits, an RBI and a run for the Leafs. Garret Takamatsu went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run, Aaron Hornostaj singled twice and drove in a run, and Justin Marra had an RBI and scored once. 

Andrew Simonetti (0-1) took the loss, going four innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. 

Panthers knock out Red Sox

KITCHENER – Keegan Marsden homered and drove in three to lead the Kitchener Panthers to a 5-2 win over the Brantford Red Sox Sunday afternoon at Jack Couch Park. 

Kitchener swept the best-of-five quarter-final and will face the winner of Toronto/Guelph. 

Brian Burton had two hits and a run, while Yorbis Borroto, Chris Gordner and Mike Gordner had a hit and run apiece. 

Christian Hauck (1-0) scattered four hits and allowed a run in six innings for the win. He walked three and struck out five. 

Nic Burdett had the Red Sox's lone RBI. Dan Jagdeo singled twice, and Ricky Murray singled and scored. 

Starter Matt Martinow (0-1) went six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with two walks.
