Community Builders is pleased to announce that a new employment training program has been developed and will run for at least the next four years.  The Trades & Diversity Training Program will run three months at a time, and has been generously funded in part by the Government of Canada's Skilled Trades Awareness and Readiness Program.

Participants will be provided with paid training to learn everything from demolition, framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, tiling, and more.  After graduation, graduates will receive support obtaining full-time employment in the trades.

“This program is so exciting because it is specifically for marginalized groups that are underrepresented in the trades,” says Shawna Bailey, director of programming at Community Builders. “For the first time ever, we will be running a program specifically for women, newcomers to Canada, and those who are Black, Indigenous, and people of colour. The Government of Canada has seen that these groups are completely underrepresented in the trades, and they have developed this amazing initiative to change that narrative.”

MP Doug Shipley agrees. “I am continuously impressed with the positive impact this not-for-profit enterprise has on our community and beyond.  Through creating affordable housing, providing trades training, and supporting individuals facing barriers to employment, Community Builders demonstrates the very best of our community."

The Community Builders’ Trades and Diversity Training Program focuses on providing meaningful training and tools to marginalized groups that are underrepresented in the trades. With this important program, a gap in our society has been identified and solutions and paths to success are actively being sought.  With this significant funding grant from the federal government, I am confident this program will expand on the incredible work of Community Builders’ to date.”

Community Builders’ Trades & Diversity Training Program (TDTP) next cohort starts in January 2023; marginalized individuals who have barriers to employment which include, but aren’t limited to, a criminal record, past drug / alcohol addictions, and a long-term history of unemployment, are highly encouraged to apply.

The TDTP is designed as pre-employment training and focuses on giving its participants the tools that they need to succeed for a life-long career in the trades.  Trainees are taught employment readiness skills, life skills, and most importantly, they’ll get real on-the-job construction training in a supportive and supervised environment.

Intake is happening now. Anyone interested in learning more can visit bit.ly/ConstructionTraineeProgram to fill out an application.
