County celebrates newcomers with upcoming recognition awards

Ninth annual awards ceremony takes place virtually on Nov. 22

MIDHURST – The 2021 Newcomer Recognition Awards have once again moved online due to the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the ninth annual award ceremony launching on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. via YouTube.

Showcasing the accomplishments of leaders and champions who have taken action to enhance the lives of newcomers across the county, the event will also feature a keynote address from award-winning science communicator and medical researcher Dr. Krishana Sankar.

Sankar, who recently received her doctorate in medicine from the University of Toronto, currently serves as the co-founder for the Women of Colour in STEAMM Canada (WoCScan), and was a co-founder of the U of T Diabetes Canada Chapter, where she works to spread awareness and inform the public on diabetes research.

Award recipients are nominated by their peers through an open nomination process. Awards will be handed out for the following categories: Immigrant Entrepreneur; Ethno-Cultural Group; Multiculturalism through Education; Service Excellence Award; Immigrant Youth; Immigrant Mentor; Immigrant Artist; Marketing and Outreach; Youth Community Champion; and Community Champion.
