The City of Barrie is participating in Culture Days, a Canada-wide celebration of arts and culture taking place from Sept. 22 to Oct. 15.

This year’s programming features an interactive three-week schedule of free, accessible and behind-the-scenes experiences offered in person, online, and through self-guided exploration.

Highlights of this year’s programming include:

Culture Days kick-off on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Meridian Place

Enjoy free, interactive performances and art activities, learn about community arts organizations, and take guided tours of downtown Barrie’s history and public art. Featuring workshops and performances by Bravado!, Barrie’s poet laureate, Ty the Poetess, Freez’Careeb and more.

Culture Night Out on Thursday, Oct. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m., Sandbox Centre

Join artist Sean-William Dawson for an artist talk, and the premiere of his two new YouTube videos. The videos are part of a series called Outta the Box, where the artist opens packages with random objects and uses them to create an art piece. Tour the Sandbox Centre’s state-of-the-art business incubator space while connecting with others in the community and sneaking a peek at a new community-building art initiative.

The Giving Tree: A Retelling of a Traditional Métis Story on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon, South Simcoe Métis Council, 64 Cedar Pointe Dr., Unit 1401 and 1402

Bring your little ones to join Métis podcast producer Samantha Loney in the reading of the traditional Métis story of the Giving Tree. Around the theme of reciprocity, they will create a craft to leave as a gift for the tree and receive one in return. The event is recommended for children aged four to nine years old.

Be sure to check out other Culture Days events hosted by the Barrie Public Library, Barrie Farmers’ Market, Downtown Barrie BIA, MacLaren Art Centre, Barrie Film Festival, Barrie Folk Society, Georgian College Campus Gallery, the Barrie Native Friendship Centre and UPlift Black.
