Sunday afternoon’s fire at a west-end Barrie auto-body shop may have cost as much as $1 million in damages, but the cause is not yet known.
At one point yesterday, the Barrie fire department had up to six fire trucks on the scene battling the blaze at Barrie Frame and Alignment, located at the corner of Tiffin Street and Ferndale Drive.
“The fire appeared to have started in one of the commercial vehicles that was parked in the garage, although the exact cause of ignition has not been determined," deputy chief Ed Davis told BarrieToday on Monday. "We do know the area of origin.”
Damage to structure and vehicles has been estimated to be in excess of $1 million, he said.
“Due to heat damage to the structural components of the building, the business will need to remain closed until engineers conduct an evaluation, coupled with removal of damaged contents,” Davis added. “This could take several weeks.”
When crews got to the scene around 2 p.m., Oct. 2, heavy heat and smoke was coming out of the building.
Around 2:45 p.m., white smoke was still coming out of the back of the building as an aerial ladder was stationed overhead.
No one was at the business at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.
